Parked along the lower Colorado River in southeastern Utah, Moab offers a plethora of spectacular white water rafting opportunities. Cooling splashes and calm swimming waters beautifully balance the dry desert heat. Trips range from 1/2 to 6 days with mild, intermediate, and wild options.

Daily Rafting

The Moab Daily section of the lower Colorado River, also known as Castle Valley and Fisher Towers, begins approximately 25-30 miles upstream from Moab, depending on the trip length and water flow conditions.

This serene section of the Colorado River moseys through a big beautiful valley lined with monuments, before cutting through a towering red rock canyon that meanders back toward Moab. Along the way are some of Utah’s most impressive geologic features like Fisher Towers, Castleton Tower, and the Priest and Nuns.

The waters on this stretch, stay pretty warm from late spring to early fall. You’ll spend most of your time floating, with a few Class II rapids to cool you off along the way. Expect river games, splash fights, and lots of fun interpretations from your river guide on this mild trip!

The winding river corridor offers stunning views of the 12,000-foot La Sal Mountains, surrendering into the surrounding red rock rendered landscape. The journey features mild Class I and II whitewater, rolling through the likes of Onion Creek, Landslide, and Rocky rapids.

For the more adventurous, Cataract Canyon spans 99 miles of the Colorado river from Moab to Lake Powell through Canyonlands National Park. With more than 30 class III and IV rapids, the trip boasts the biggest whitewater in Utah. Not to mention, the park’s rich archeological history with many sites along the river bed. Cataract Canyon can be done in a 3,4,5, or 6 day trip depending on your preference for side hikes, archaeological stops, and time spent relaxing at camp.

What is the river for white water rafting in Moab?

The Colorado River runs through Moab, Utah and is the most commonly rafted river near Moab. Trip options on the section of the Lower Colorado river near Moab range from ½ to 3 days. Other popular multi-day rafting trips depart from Moab as well including Cataract Canyon and Desolation Canyon on the green river. The rafting season typically runs from May through September. Peak flows with the most exciting whitewater usually occur from late May to late June during the snowmelt runoff. July and August offer warmer weather and more moderate flows, which are perfect for families.

Rafting in Moab is commonly recognized as the best family white water rafting trip in Utah! The class I currents with a few class II rapids make it accessible for young and old. The minimum requirements are 35lbs or more – inorder to fit into the smallest coastguard approved personal flotation device – which is generally 4 years of age . The long season from March to November provides plenty of opportunity to visit and the warm water is perfect for swimming during the trip.

Rafting is considered an inherently dangerous activity. However, we take many precautions to minimize risk. We have a division dedicated to risk management, guide training, and continuing guide education. Trip leaders average 2,000 river miles and are certified in CPR and First Aid. Guides are incentivized to earn more advanced whitewater and medical certifications and may have swiftwater rescue, wilderness advanced first aid, wilderness first responder, or are emergency medical technicians.

The best time to raft in Moab depends on the experience you’re looking for. Between March and May the scenery is unbeatable with green brush along the river bank contrasting red sandstone cliffs and the snowcapped La Sal Mountains. June brings the highest water flows and thus the biggest rapids. Rapids like rocky rapid, onion creek, and whites can become class III adding some extra excitement! July and August bring the heat, making the trip ideal for long swims and floating besides the raft. The fall season brings back the views as the colors change on the La Sal Mountains, filling in the color palette with shades of yellow and orange to compliment the red rock and green brush.

Quick drying material clothing like polyester or nylon is best. Hats with sunglasses are highly recommended too. It is recommended to use a sunglasses strap, also known as chums. Chums are available for purchase at the meet location gift shop!
