White Water Rafting Trips Near Denver, CO FAQs
When is the best time to raft near Denver?
The best time to raft near Denver depends on the river and the type of adventure you’re seeking. For the highest water and most powerful rapids on Clear Creek or the Arkansas River, mid-to-late June is the peak of the snowmelt. If you are looking for a relaxing, scenic float or a family-friendly trip with consistent conditions, the Upper Colorado and the Arkansas River offer fantastic rafting from July through Labor Day.
When are rafting trips available near Denver?
Our Denver-area rafting seasons vary by river. Clear Creek is a short and sweet season, typically running from mid-May through mid-August. The Arkansas River and the Upper Colorado River offer longer windows, often stretching from May into September. With multiple daily departures across these locations, rafting is a convenient day trip for guests staying in Denver, Golden, Boulder, or Colorado Springs.
What is the minimum age for rafting near Denver?
To prioritize guest experience and manage the inherent risks of river environments, minimum ages are set based on the intensity and technicality of each river section:
- Upper Colorado River (Class II, III): 4+ years old or 35lbs.
- Clear Creek Classic Section & Browns Canyon on the Arkansas River (Class III): 7+ years old (and at least 50 lbs).
- Clear Creek Advanced/Intermediate Trip and The Numbers on the Arkansas River (Class IV): 15+ years old (this may increase to 16 during the high-water peak in June).
These requirements help match every paddler with a trip suited to their physical abilities and comfort level within the river environments.
Are Denver rafting trips suitable for young children?
Yes, our Clear Creek Classic trip is a family friendly rafting trip and is a great introduction to rafting for beginners and young children. The minimum age for this trip is 7 years old. For families with younger children check out the Upper Colorado River.
What should I wear and bring on my Denver rafting trip?
Since Clear Creek is fed by high-altitude snowmelt, staying warm is essential! We provide complimentary wetsuits and splash jackets for all guests at our Idaho Springs office. We recommend:
- Clothing: A swimsuit or synthetic base layers (like polyester or spandex) to wear under your wetsuit. Avoid cotton, as it stays cold when wet.
- Footwear: Secure water shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Wetsuit boots are also available for rent.
- Essentials: Polarized sunglasses with a retention strap (like Chums), waterproof sunscreen, and a hat that fits comfortably under a helmet.
You can find a detailed list of what to wear and bring here.
Is white water rafting near Denver safe?
White water rafting is an inherently dangerous activity with risks that cannot be entirely eliminated. As a result, we require all guests to sign a liability waiver and assumption of risk before departing. However, your experience is our top priority. To minimize risk, our trip leaders average over 2,000 river miles of experience and we utilize highly maintained self-bailing rafts, U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices, and helmets.
How far is the rafting from Denver?
We are located in Idaho Springs, which is exactly 32 miles from downtown Denver. Depending on traffic, it is typically a 35 to 45 minute drive via I-70 West.
Do I need a car to get there from Denver?
While most guests drive themselves, ride share services like Uber and Lyft do operate between Denver and Idaho Springs. However, we recommend arranging your return trip in advance as availability can vary in the mountains.
Can I raft and be back in Denver for dinner?
Absolutely. Most of our Denver rafting trips last about 2.5 hours door to door, meaning you can easily be back in the city by mid day.
What is the scenery like on Denver rafting trips?
While Clear Creek runs parallel to the I-70 corridor, you will find that the river is tucked into a narrow canyon that naturally isolates you from the noise and view of the highway. As you drop into the gorge, the landscape is dominated by dense ponderosa pine forests, towering granite cliffs, and the often snow caped Rocky Mountains. Between the technical rapids, you can also spot local wildlife like bighorn sheep, eagles, and river otters plus historic Gold Rush landmarks like the Argo Mill and the Charlie Tayler Water Wheel.
Do I need to know how to paddle or have prior experience?
No, previous experience is not required! Our trips are designed for all levels, and our guides will provide all the instruction you need. You’ll learn the basic paddle strokes and commands before you even get on the river. The trip is a team effort, and your guide will be there every step of the way to lead the group.
