Our Trout lake Paddle Board and Inflatable Kayak Tours allow you to sit back and relax while we provide all the necessary transportation and equipment. Before you put on the water, our instructors will conduct an on shore orientation covering the basics of the equipment, paddling techniques, and paddling positions.
Once on the water, your guide will lead a route to the North end of the lake where the Lake Fork of the San Miguel comes in (keep your eye out for Brown and Rainbow Trout in the clear waters below). Here you’ll have some time to explore on your own and take photos. Depending on the groups preferences your guide may lead another route along the south end of the lake and past the dam before returning to the put in spot.
For those preferring to kayak instead of paddle boarding, it is recommended they opt to sit on the paddle board and paddle with a double bladed kayak paddle. Sitting on the paddle board is typically recommended, instead of paddling an inflatable kayak, because the shape and fin of a paddle board allow for a more enjoyable paddling experience. However, those looking for added comfort and stability of a kayak may request an inflatable kayak to place on top of their stand up paddle board which allows them to keep the benefits of a paddle board’s shape and fin while utilizing the back rest of a kayak.

Telluride Paddleboarding & Kayaking FAQs
When is the best time to paddleboard in Telluride?
The most tranquil time to be on the water is during our morning tours, which typically depart around 9:00 AM. This allows you to experience the glass-like surface of Trout Lake before the afternoon winds pick up. Seasonally, July and August offer the warmest air temperatures, making a splash into the alpine water feel refreshing rather than chilly.
When can I book a paddleboard or kayak tour in Telluride?
Our Telluride water season generally runs from late May through September. We offer half-day tours daily throughout the summer, providing a peaceful alternative to the higher adventure river trips on the San Miguel River.
What is the minimum age for paddleboarding and kayaking in Telluride?
The minimum age for our guided tours on Trout Lake is 5 years old. This makes it one of our most family-friendly adventures!
What should I wear and bring for my Telluride paddleboard trip?
Telluride’s weather can be unpredictable, and because Trout Lake sits at a high elevation, temperatures can shift quickly. We recommend:
- Clothing: Swimsuits or quick-dry athletic clothing. Avoid cotton, as it won’t keep you warm if you get wet.
- Layers: Bring a lightweight, synthetic layer or a windbreaker. Wetsuits are available for rent for those who prefer extra warmth.
- Footwear: Water shoes or sandals with a heel strap are highly recommended for the shoreline.
- Essentials: Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses (with a retention strap), and a refillable water bottle. We provide a complimentary dry bag and waterproof phone case for your use during the trip!
You can find a detailed list of what to wear and bring here.
Are paddleboarding and kayaking in Telluride safe?
Any water-based activity is inherently dangerous and carries risks that cannot be completely eliminated; therefore, we require all guests to sign a liability waiver and assumption of risk. However, your experience is our top priority. Our paddleboard and kayak tours take place on the calm, non-moving waters of Trout Lake to minimize risk. Our instructors provide a briefing covering paddling techniques and self-rescue.
