White water rafting in Pagosa Springs is one of the most popular summer activities in southwest Colorado. Nestled among the San Juan and Piedra rivers, there is plentiful opportunity for mild and intermediate white water rafting trips. Season length varies depending on snowmelt, however river flows are typically permitting May – June. The minimum trip age starts at 4 years and 35lbs.
San Juan River
The San Juan River begins its headwaters just 30 miles north of Pagosa, atop Wolf Creek Pass before winding its way through the vibrant town. Rafting through Pagosa Springs offers a mild half day trip with class II and III Rapids.
Piedra River
If you’re looking for a little more adventure and more time on the water, check out the Piedra River. Just 20 minutes outside of Pagosa Springs, the Piedra clamors its way through limestone cliffs, granite canyon walls, and lush alpine forest in Colorado’s largest protected area of wilderness. A Pagosa Springs rafting trip on the Piedra River features consistent class II and III rapids with two class IV pool drop rapids. The trip fills the bulk of your day, meeting at 9 am and getting you back to Pagosa in the late afternoon, just in time for pre-dinner appetizers. Deli style lunch is provided in the wilderness river canyon.

Late Summer Rafters
For travelers visiting Pagosa later in the summer, consider rafting trips on the Animas River in Durango, Colorado. The higher elevation river drainage keeps water flows high enough for rafting through July and August when flows on the San Juan and Piedra Rivers are too low.
For Families
Just an hour drive from Pagosa, experience the Lower Animas River on a ¾, ½, or ¼ day rafting trip. The Lower Animas River features mild options with class II and III rapids. The afternoon ½ day trip is perfect for families coming from Pagosa, allowing for plenty of time to check out the town and grab a bite to eat before checking in at 1:30.
