More About This Trip

Via ferrata, which translates to “iron road” in Italian, refers to a type of protected climbing that utilizes fixed anchors, cables, ladders, and bridges to create safe passage across otherwise challenging cliff faces. The Mount Blue Sky course is a masterful integration of natural rock features with carefully engineered climbing aids, creating a progression of challenges that build confidence and skill throughout the three-hour adventure. Unlike traditional rock climbing, which requires extensive technical knowledge and equipment, the Mount Blue Sky Via Ferrata allows participants to focus on movement, exposure, and incredible mountain scenery while professional guides handle safety systems and route navigation.

The adventure begins at our Idaho Springs outpost, where participants receive comprehensive safety orientation and equipment fitting before traveling to the base of the climbing route. Once on the via ferrata, participants will traverse exposed cliff sections using classic techniques, soar across canyons on ziplines that provide both transportation and aerial thrills, and conclude their adventure with a controlled 50-foot rappel that offers a completely different perspective on the mountain environment.

Participants should be comfortable with heights and possess basic physical fitness for sustained activity over several hours. The assisted nature of via ferrata climbing makes it accessible to a wide range of fitness levels while still providing genuine physical challenge! Exposure levels vary. throughout the course, but are appropriate for participants with limited climbing experience. Strategic placement of rest platforms and belay stations allows for breaks and photo opportunities while maintaining the overall flow and challenge of the route.

Location, Location, Location

Located just 30 minutes west of Denver via I-70, the Mount Blue Sky Via Ferrata course provides Front Range residents and visitors with unprecedented access to high-alpine adventure without the lengthy approach times or difficult access roads. This convenient location makes the Via Ferrata course an ideal choice for day trips, weekend adventures, and vacation activities that want to maximize mountain time while minimizing travel logistics – this adventure can easily fit into any vacation!

Idaho Springs itself offers additional attractions that can extend your mountain adventure beyond the zipline experience. Our personal favorite is rafting on Clear Creek, which boasts some of Colorado’s most famous whitewater. Trip options include a beginner 2h 30m trip, an intermediate 2h 30m trip and an intermediate full day trip.
