Colorado Jeep Tours FAQs

When is the best time for a Jeep tour in Colorado?

Anytime during our season (May through October) is a fantastic time to head into the mountains!

  • Late Spring (May/June): Ideal for seeing rushing waterfalls in La Plata Canyon and alpine snowbanks near Silverton.
  • Summer (July/August): This is the peak for Colorado’s famous wildflowers, which blanket the alpine meadows in vibrant colors.

Fall (September/October): The ultimate time for leaf-peeping as the aspen groves turn brilliant gold against the rugged peaks of the San Juan Mountains.

Our Colorado Jeep tours typically run from May through October, depending on when the mountain roads clear of snow. We offer daily morning and afternoon departures from our Durango and Silverton locations. Our custom-converted, open-air vehicles feature canvas tops for shade and protection from rain showers, and we provide cozy blankets for those crisp morning departures.

The minimum age for our Colorado Jeep tours is 4 years old.

Note: Colorado law requires car seats or boosters for children under 8 years old. If this applies to your group, please bring the appropriate car seat or booster for use in our tour vehicles.

Weather in the San Juan Mountains can change rapidly, and temperatures are often 10-15 degrees cooler at the summit! We recommend dressing in layers:

  • Clothing: A t-shirt paired with a sweatshirt and a windbreaker or warm jacket.
  • Footwear: Sturdy sneakers or light hiking boots (no flip-flops).
  • Essentials: A sun hat or beanie (depending on the month), polarized sunglasses, and waterproof sunscreen.
  • Gear: A refillable water bottle (we provide water for refills) and your camera to capture the 360-degree vistas.

Off-road Jeep touring is an inherently dangerous activity that involves travel over rugged, uneven terrain and narrow shelf roads with significant exposure; therefore, we require all guests to sign a liability waiver and assumption of risk. To minimize these risks, we utilize highly maintained vehicles equipped with roll cages. Our guides are experts in off-road 4×4 navigation and are certified in CPR and First Aid.
