My family went on an afternoon jeep tour in Silverton with our guide Jay. It was the most wonderful experience! Jay asked what everyone wanted to see, and waterfalls and mines were mentioned. He drove us to a mine high in the mountains, explained how to look for rocks that may contain metals, and then we got to crack open the rocks right on the mountain to check for metals in them. Along the way, we saw several waterfalls, but he took us to a huge one after our mine adventure! He was incredibly friendly, very informative on everything, and overall just made the entire tour so much more fun than any of us expected. I would recommend anyone to book with Mild to Wild, especially with Jay for the Silverton jeep tour.

Jeepin’ in Silverton My wife and I did a 1/2 day Jeep Tour in Silverton for our anniversary. Miles was our guide, and he was AMAZING! He was very knowledgeable, kind, entertaining, took us to some really great spots, and we could tell that he truly loves Colorado and the great outdoors. The views were incredible, especially in the Fall season. We would definitely recommend this trip and would recommend Miles to be your guide.

Durango Train and Silverton Jeep Tour - Highly Recommend! This was our first trip to Durango and we booked several tours through Mild to Wild after reading reviews of the company and packages online. We arrived in Durango and our first tour was the Durango Train and Silverton Jeep Tour. The company provided straight forward directions so check-in was a breeze. Our tour guide, Cat, provided a warm atmosphere so our family bonded easily with the other family in our tour group. Cat provided everything and more that you could want from a guide - historic information about the area, games on the drive up, and a personalized jeep tour based on our interests (we opted for waterfalls, alpine lakes, old mines). She was also kind enough to take photos of our whole family. I loved learning about her and appreciated the personal touch she added to our trip. She dropped us off in Silverton with the best recommendations for lunch which we took advantage of. We booked prime seats on the Silverton train based on the company’s recommendations. We spent the last three hours of the day relaxing in the open car train with to die for views before returning to Durango. I highly recommend booking this tour (ask for Cat!), we were able to maximize our vacation time and minimize our stress and really just enjoy our family.

The Jeep tour in Silverton with Johnathan exceeded our expectations! He was very knowledgeable and made it so much fun! I loved how he tuned in to people's specific interests (we had "adventures", and a rock lover) and made a point of showing them things they would love. He even brought items back to the jeep to show a woman who was unable to walk very far on uneven ground....how sweet! I highly recommend this trip and eapecially Johnathan!

We went on the Silverton Jeep Tour and it could not have been more perfect. Our guide, Jay, was wonderful! He knew everyone’s name and made an extra effort to ensure all riders got what they wanted out of the trip. After our first stop, the vehicle had an issue and Jay brought us back into town safely and swapped vehicles. He took us back out and made sure we enjoyed the full tour. We were looking for a way to enjoy the scenery without the effort and this tour did exactly that! Even my teenagers enjoyed it, taking pictures all along the way!!

Fantastic jeep tour with fantastic guide Art was fantastic, from the moment he picked us up he made sure me and my family were taking care of of and having fun! We forgot our water but he brought some, we took the Silverton jeep tour and had a blast. He was very knowledgeable about animas forks and even had binoculars when we spotted a moose. The train back was shut down that day and he drop us back into town and made suggestions for dinner. He went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. My kids loved the bumpy trails and the whole experience was amazing. Will definitely be coming back

Silverton Jeep Tours FAQs

When is the best time for a Silverton Jeep tour?

The high-country season in Silverton lasts from May through Early October depending on snowfall and snowmelt.

  • June: The best time to see massive snow banks on the high passes and rushing alpine waterfalls as the apline tundra thaws.
  • July & August: The absolute peak for wildflowers and the best time to explore the ghost towns in mild summer temperatures.
  • September: A breathtaking time for photography as the high-altitude shrubs and grasses turn deep reds and oranges against the rugged, iron-rich peaks.

Silverton routes reach elevations near 12,000 feet, the season begins in May once the mountain passes are cleared of snow and runs through early October. We offer morning and afternoon departures that meet right in the heart of historic Silverton. Our custom-converted, open-air vehicles provide 360-degree views of the jagged San Juan peaks, and we provide blankets to help maintain your comfort during the cooler temperatures found at the summits.

The minimum age for our Silverton tours is 4 years old. These alpine routes involve steep grades and rocky, technical terrain that younger adventurers usually find quite thrilling!

Colorado law requires car seats or boosters for children under 8 years old. To support the logistical needs of your family, please bring the appropriate car seat or booster for your child to use in our tour vehicles.

Weather at 12,000 feet is unpredictable and can change in an instant! Even in the middle of summer, temperatures at the top of a pass can be significantly colder than in town. We recommend:

  • Clothing: Dress in multiple layers, including a warm fleece or jacket and long pants.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots are required for safely exploring the ruins of mining sites and ghost towns.
  • Essentials: High SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a warm hat or beanie.
  • Gear: A camera to capture the historic structures and a refillable water bottle (we provide water for refills).

For more details visit our what to wear and bring page.

Off-road Jeep touring is an inherently dangerous activity that involves travel over rugged, uneven terrain and narrow shelf roads with significant exposure; therefore, we require all guests to sign a liability waiver and assumption of risk. To minimize these risks, we utilize highly maintained vehicles equipped with roll cages. Our guides are experts in off-road 4×4 navigation and are certified in CPR and First Aid.
