River Conditions and Seasonality

Gushing from the peaks of Loveland Pass and down the east face of the Continental Divide, Clear Creek boasts some of Colorado’s most renowned whitewater. Because Clear Creek is a free flowing river fed by snowmelt, water levels fluctuate throughout the season, providing a unique experience every time you hit the river. During the high water season, which typically begins in late May and lasts through mid-June, the river becomes fast and powerful, offering the peak water flows for adrenaline seekers. As the run off tapers in late June and July, the rapids become more defined, requiring precise technical maneuvers to navigate the canyon’s drops. While flows are lower in August, the Clear Creek rafting conditions remain excellent for an engaging and scenic trip through the historic mining district of Idaho Springs. Whether you are visiting in high water rafting season or looking for a late summer adventure, our guides are experts at navigating these changing flows to ensure the best white water rafting experience near the Front Range.

The History

Journey through time in your descent down the river as you uncover Colorado’s Rocky Mountain mining history. Chicago Creek, a more prominent landmark along the rafting journey, is documented as the location where the first gold nugget was discovered during the Idaho Springs gold rush, initiating the Gold Rush of 1859. Then float past the historic Argo Mine and Mill, once one of the world’s most productive mines, which processed over $100 million of gold ore.

The Charlie Taylor Water Wheel stands as another testament to the area’s rich mining heritage, while Kermit’s Access (a popular take-out point) is named after an old dive bar, now Two Bears Tap & Grill, which serves one of the oldest pork green chili recipes in Colorado – a delicious post-rafting meal!

Location, Location, Location

Clear Creek is ideally located in the Front Range, approximately 30-45 minutes from the state capital. It’s also easily accessible from Winter Park, Breckenridge and surrounding Summit County, and is the closest rafting destination to both Golden and Boulder. This prime location means less time driving and more time enjoying your summer adventures!

Clear Creek rafting Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to swim to go rafting on Clear Creek?

For our beginner level trips like the Clear Creek Classic, you do not need to be a strong swimmer. Every guest is fitted with a Type V Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) designed to keep your head above water. However, for our Intermediate and Advanced trips on the Upper Clear Creek section, we strongly recommend that participants have strong swimming abilities and are comfortable in moving water.

We recommend wearing quick drying synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, or fleece. Avoid cotton as it stays wet and will make you cold. For footwear, you must have secure shoes that stay on your feet, like river sandals with straps or old tennis shoes. Flip flops and Crocs are not permitted on the river. If you do not have appropriate wetsuit boots are available for rent that will help keep your feet warm and protected. We provide complimentary helmets, PFDs, wetsuits, and splash jackets for your trip to keep you warm in the chilly snowmelt water.

Rafting is an inherently dangerous activity, however guest experience is our number 1 priority. We take the inherent risks of rafting very seriously and seek to minimize them with our in house guide training and program dedicated to risk management. Mild to wild guides on Clear Creek are certified in first aid and CPR and are incentivized to achieve additional medical and whitewater certifications such as Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA), Wilderness First Responder (WFR), and Swift Water Rescue (SWR).

Rafting is a “rain or shine” activity! You are going to get wet regardless, and many rafters find that the Rocky Mountain rain can add to the adventure! We provide thermal river rafting equipment like wetsuits and splash tops to keep you warm during your trip!

Our Idaho Springs location is the most convenient rafting destination for those staying in the city. We are located just 30 miles west of downtown Denver, which is typically a quick 30 to 45 minute drive via I-70. This makes it easy to fit a world class whitewater adventure into a single day trip!

Tipping is never required but is always greatly appreciated if you enjoyed your adventure! Much like the service industry, our guides work hard to ensure an enjoyable experience. A standard gratuity is typically 15-20% of your trip cost, similar to a restaurant.

Yes, our Clear Creek Intermediate Full Day Trip includes a delicious riverside lunch, so you can refuel and relax before tackling the next section of the river.
