More About Rafting The Numbers
The Story of The Numbers
Located about ten miles north of Buena Vista, Colorado, The Numbers section begins just below the confluence of Lake Creek, where Twin Lakes Reservoir adds recreational water to the Arkansas River to ensure this section remains optimal longer than any other Class IV rafting trip the state.
The six major rapids in this section are creativley named – Numbers 1 through 6 – in downstream order. The sequence marks one of the most famous sets of continuous whitewater drops in North America.
The put in rests at 8,640 feet of elevation and descends through granite canyons carved by meltwater from the Sawatch Mountain Range. The rocks here are ancient, formed over a billion years ago. Their tight channels and smooth ledges shape the signature hydraulics that make The Numbers technical and thrilling.
River Conditions & Seasonality
Flowing between May and early September, The Numbers offers Colorado’s longest Class IV rafting season. In May and June, snowmelt from the surrounding peaks pushes flows between 1,200 and 2,500 CFS, forming crushing waves, big holes, and strong eddies.
From mid-July through August 15th, water released from Twin Lakes and Turquoise Lake Reservoirs keeps the river running strong, averaging 700–1,200 CFS even after natural snowmelt subsides. These managed flows make The Numbers not only thrilling but remarkably reliable, a rare feature for a high adventure run.
By August 15th, the river drops to a 350 CFS base flow, offering a more technical experience that requires tactical maneuvering around large boulders to slide through tight shoots and drops.

Trip Details
The Numbers covers 5.98 miles of steep-gradient whitewater, dropping an average of 71 feet per mile through tight chutes, stair-step drops, and sharp turns. The put-in is accessed via Colorado Highway 124 (County Road 371), which follows the east bank of the river and offers BLM camping spots and scenic overlooks along the way.
Trips put in at The Numbers Recreation Site and takes out at Railroad Bridge, where the canyon widens and the gradient eases. Continuous Class II and III waves connect the six major Class IV rapids; Number 1, Number 2, Number 3, Number 4, Number 5, and Number 6Â for nearly nonstop action with short recovery pools between each.
Expect roughly 1.5 hours on the water for the half-day trip, or extend your adventure with the full-day option, which continues into the Narrows section for another six miles of scenic Class II–III whitewater. The full-day trip includes a riverside bakery-fresh lunch near the railroad bridge takeout for the half day trip and continues another 7 miles of consistent class II and III whitewater to the town of Buena Vista, totaling about 4 hours on the water and 5 hours 45 minutes round trip.

She brought history to life and brought our group together as friends. This 71 year old appreciates the support that gave me the courage to make it down & back up the ladders so I could fully experience the opportunity. Thanks!Posted on Bob Hoffman2025-10-27Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Miles was entertaining and very knowledgeable. He made the trip fun and worthwhile. I would use MILD to Wild nest time in the area.Posted on Burt T2025-10-26Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My wife and I had a Mesa Verde van tour in late October with Miles. He provided outstanding information about the archeology, indigenous peoples, terrain, climate throughout our tour. I also called the phone line and spoke with Tim about hiking opportunities in the Durango area. He listened and gave us effective guidance. This company provides excellent service!Posted on Kim Reynolds2025-10-24Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our full day tour in the Mesa Verde area was breathtaking. Got to see parts of the world that will just blow your mind. We were particularly happy with our tour guide, Jay who really knew the history and geology of the area and gave us insights into history that we had not understood before.Posted on Natalie Norman2025-10-21Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fantastic experience on our Mesa Verde National Park tour! They had to make some last-minute itinerary changes due to park staffing/government shutdown, but we still had a great time! Our tour guide Jay was very knowledgeable and extremely personable. He quickly felt like one of our family as we ventured out to the high desert. He made a point to connect with all of us, but he went out of his way to personally interact with our 2 daughters (10 and 12) and made the experience special for them. They learned so much! He was also very helpful when some of us weren't feeling so great at the high altitude! I would book with this company again in a heartbeat, especially if I could get a tour with Jay!! Thanks for the lifetime memories. What a beautiful area!Posted on Allison Posell2025-10-21Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Miles was amazing, knowledgeable, and made sure that the unexpected weather and flooding in the area did not keep us from having a good experience. Thank you for the great service recovery and adventure!Posted on Casey Mast2025-10-21Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Cat was our tour guide, and we had a great Jeep tour with the Trails and Rails – Jeep Tour & Train Package. We explored in Silverton area by Jeep and saw a ghost/mining town near the head in the Animas River. The views were amazing!Posted on Brenda Stewart2025-10-20Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Miles was an excellent tour guide, knowledgeable with a fun sense of humor. He was flexible and good natured and passed his love of the mountains on to us.
