Durango Area Museums
Durango and its surrounding areas are full of history. From the Ancestral Puebloans who crafted Mesa Verde’s massive cliff dwellings, to the 19th century miners who laid the tracks of steam-powered trains through rocky mountain peaks. For the history buff, Durango is the perfect place to learn about southwest Colorado’s lore.
Exhibitions of trains, planes, and automobiles all for free-ninety-free are waiting at the south end of Main street in downtown Durango. Train buffs and anyone with an interest in America’s first modes of transportation will enjoy this museum right off the railroad tracks.
This is a fun stop for a quick activity with kids where kids can feed trout and learn about other local animals. The cozy museum is free (with donations appreciated) and covers southwest Colorado’s wildlife.
The Animas Museum was originally a schoolhouse at the turn of the 20th century. In spirit of these beginnings, the museum captures the essence of growing up and living in the Animas Valley during the industrial revolution. Exhibits include the oldest home in Durango, a Native American gallery, and classrooms from 1904.
Among the many galleries along Main Avenue, this one in particular boasts an impressive collection of paintings, photography, sculptures, and jewelry from local artists. This is a wonderful stop for those who enjoy landscapes, wildlife sculptures, and other wilderness inspired creations.
Native American history is the foundation of southwest Colorado culture. Traditional woven rugs, tribal pottery, turquoise jewelry, and paintings fill this beautiful space with indigenous creativity.
