More About This Trip
Through the rich forests of the Piedra River Canyon, a glimmering and free flowing mountain stream rollicks with adventurous whitewater come spring. It’s Colorado’s most regulated and restricted river, and rafting within such a raw wilderness requires one eye for the rapids and the other for moose and black bears.
The Upper Piedra’s narrow waterway sends rafts bounding between gorgeous granite and hefty boulders, making the ride just as scenic as it technical for paddlers. The beginning of the run comes with long Class II rapid sections, followed by Class III and IV drops once the river fills from its contributing creeks along the way.
Be ready to spin and skirt around the river’s obstacles, and drop into chutes and staircase rapids— a great way to earn an evening at the hot springs!
Upper Piedra River raft trips start at $209.00.

Piedra River White Water Rafting FAQs
When is the best time to raft the Piedra River?
The best time to raft is typically late May through June when the snowmelt from the San Juan Mountains is at its peak. Due to variable snow fall and a lower elevation run off, the flows can change quickly, making early summer the most reliable time for consistent Class III-IV thrills.
When can I raft the Piedra River?
The Piedra River season typically lasts from mid-May through early July. We recommend booking your adventure early in the season to catch the Piedra at its peak! If the river’s natural cycle brings water levels below raftable levels we’ll seamlessly transition your trip to the stunning San Miguel River or Upper Animas River depending on the best fit for your group.
What is the minimum age to raft the Piedra?
The minimum age for the Piedra River is 12 years old. Participants should be in good physical condition and prepared for an active day of paddling.
What should I wear and bring on my Piedra River trip?
The Piedra is a high altitude, snow fed river, so staying warm is essential! We recommend:
- Clothing: A thermal wetsuit is required (rentals are available). Wear a swimsuit or synthetic base layers underneath. Avoid cotton, as it will pull heat away from your body.
- Footwear: Secure water shoes or sandals with a heel strap (like Chacos or Tevas) or old sneakers. No flip-flops or Crocs.
- Essentials: Polarized sunglasses with a retention strap and waterproof sunscreen.
You can find a detailed list of what to wear and bring here.
Is white water rafting on the Piedra River safe?
White water rafting is an inherently dangerous activity with risks that cannot be entirely eliminated. As a result, we require all guests to sign a liability waiver and assumption of risk before departing. However, your experience is our top priority. To minimize risk in this remote wilderness, we employ professional guides who are trained beyond state requirements and provide pay incentives for advanced certifications like Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and Swift Water Rescue. We also utilize highly maintained and quality equipment, satellite communication devices, and comprehensive first aid kits.
