About This Trip
Of all the ways to escape Durango for a quick mountain fix, a journey into La Plata Canyon’s Columbus Basin is hard to beat! In just 2½ hours, you’ll climb to 10,745 feet for sweeping views of alpine meadows, soaring peaks, and vibrant mountain scenery. Along the way, you’ll discover cascading waterfalls, historic mining sites, and the rich beauty of Colorado’s wild country.
This shorter adventure still packs in plenty of wildlife sightings — keep your eyes peeled for deer, marmots, foxes, birds of prey, and, if luck’s on your side, a moose or bear.
From late June through early August, the meadows shimmer with wildflowers. Come late September to early October, glowing aspen groves take over the scene in a blaze of fall color. Whatever the season, Columbus Basin offers a taste of the San Juan Mountains you won’t forget.

This was our second time with Mild to Wild….this time we brought family! Best wishes to Creel! His brother might be cool, but Creel is the coolest! 🫡😂 If you’re in the Durango area - book a tour with these folks. You won’t regret it!! Note: looked at my trip advisor post from July 2018. Back then it was Rio who was Ana amazing guide. Creel holds to our previous excellent experience.Posted on Google Shannon GleasonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. He went above and beyond to make sure our daughter had the best time. He took her down the falls, let her paddle the raft and made her feel included throughout the trip. She had an absolute blast, and his kindness and patience made the experience even more memorable for our family. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide.
