More About High Adventure Rafting Trips

The Upper Animas River

Known as one of the most demanding and continuous sections of whitewater in North America, Upper Animas River rafting is our most beloved rafting trip. Located deep in the wilderness near Durango, CO, this run is accessible only via the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. On the Animas River, you will encounter relentless Class IV and V rapids that require a high level of physical stamina. We offer this high adventure rafting experience as a 1, 2, or 3-day expedition during the peak runoff from May through July. Due to the extreme intensity, the minimum age is 14 (increasing to 16 during high water).

The Numbers

If you are looking for technical precision and non stop action, The Numbers on the Arkansas River is the gold standard. Located just north of Buena Vista, CO, this stretch delivers seven miles of nearly continuous Class IV rapids. We run these full and half day trips from May through August, challenging paddlers ages 15 and up to paddle hard through tight channels and steep drops.

Cataract Canyon

Deep within Canyonlands National Park, Cataract Canyon on the Colorado River is a transformative journey. This expedition near Moab, UT ranges from 2 to 6 days and features the most powerful hydraulics in the West. While the river varies from Class IV to V depending on the flow, the May and June runoff creates massive waves that are the biggest in the state. We welcome adventurers as young as 10 (increasing to 14 during high water) to witness this geological masterpiece. Trips range from 2-6 days.

Based out of Cañon City, this full-day trip features legendary Class IV and V drops like “Sledgehammer” and “Boateater.” The season runs from May through Labor Day, providing plenty of opportunity to face these towering canyon waves. This trip is designed for adrenaline seekers ages 15 and up who want to experience the crown jewel of the Arkansas. Our trips on the Royal Gorge are part of our 2 and 3 day Arkansas River rafting trips.

Frequently Asked Questions: The Wild Side

What is the difference between "Mild" and "Wild"?

It comes down to technicality and consequence. Our “Mild” trips (Class II-III) are about splashes, scenery, and relaxation. Our high adventure rafting trips (Class IV-V) require active participation, physical stamina, and a “paddle-hard” mentality. You’re not just a passenger on these runs; you’re an essential part of the crew.

While prior experience is highly recommended, it isn’t always mandatory for “aggressive first-timers” who are physically fit and strong swimmers. However, certain runs – like the Upper Animas – require a mandatory swim test. If you’re unsure, our Adventure Consultants can help match your fitness to the right river.

If you want the absolute biggest waves, book during the peak spring runoff (typically May through June). This is when the snowmelt turns technical runs into the high volume, wild white water rafting legends are made of. By July and August, the rivers typically become more technical and “bony.”

In high adventure rafting, “swimming” is a possibility. Before we push off, our guides provide an extensive safety orientation, including whitewater swimming techniques and self rescue. On our most intense runs, we often utilize safety kayakers or 2 or more boats to ensure a quick recovery.

We provide high buoyancy Type V PFDs and helmets. For our cold water high adventure runs, we also offer professional grade wetsuits and splash jackets to keep you warm and protected.

Because these trips are physically demanding, guests should be in good health and capable of strenuous paddling. There is no specific maximum weight limit.

While no outdoor adventure is without risk, Mild to Wild has been a leader in river safety since 1994. Our high adventure guides are our most senior staff members, often with thousands of river miles and advanced Swiftwater Rescue Training.
