Luckily, I was snapped back to reality after our Jeep Trail Tour drivers brought photo and video footage back from a recent tour to Animas Forks, near Silverton. Many of the Aspen trees have already turned a brilliant gold and cover the hillsides up there. It just goes to show that elevation can really speed things up. It is already getting much cooler at night in those high mountain towns which causes the color change to come earlier than down here in Durango. So ready or not, here fall comes! And I’m here to share with you the top spots to see the fall foliage in Southwestern Colorado:
1.Silverton & the Animas Valley – Maybe you’ve heard this one before, but I’m sure the leaf peeping society would agree. When you spot those first few trees starting to shift to gold, yellow and red you now it’s time to head to Silverton. There’s nothing like riding the Historical Narrow Gauge Railroad on a cool sunny day to get you excited for apple cider and sweaters!
Insiders tip: Many businesses in Silverton close down for the winter, so this is a great time to do some shopping as most everything is on sale!
2. La Plata Canyon – A real gem. Many people come through Durango and never experience La Plata Canyon, about 20 miles West of Durango. This is one of my favorite escapes in the summer for camping, hiking and mountain biking. In the fall I go specifically to ride up to Kennebec Pass. Wear layers and bring a thermos with something warm, you’ll want to sit and take in the amazing views as all day long.
3. The San Juan Skyway – Have a friend and a few days? Make the full loop! Considered one of the most scenic drives in America, you’ll travel by way of the amazing San Juan Mountains through popular mountain towns like Silverton, Ouray, Telluride and our very own Durango.
Insiders tip: Try a milkshake from Mouse’s Chocolate’s in Ouray. You will be happy you did!</em
