Fall is arguably the most beautiful time to be in Durango and the surrounding area of Southwest Colorado. The expansive aspen groves sweeping across the mountains serve up a scenery overload, offering a seemingly new landscape to play in.
This guide will give you all the information you need to do Durango in fall right!
When to See the Fall Colors
One thing to keep in mind when planning your autumn escapades is that the higher you go in altitude, the earlier the leaves change. Elevations above 8,000 feet usually kick off the fall color season in early September.
The weather also impacts when the aspens get their glow on. If there’s a cold snap early in the season, the colors will snap to it. If it stays warm, the colors will take longer to change. With that in mind, here are the typical time frames for the best fall colors in Durango, Silverton and Telluride:
Durango
(Early-Mid October)
Silverton
(Mid-Late September)
Telluride
(Late September – Early October)
