Visiting Durango in the Fall

Visiting Durango in the Fall

Fall is arguably the most beautiful time to be in Durango and the surrounding area of Southwest Colorado. The expansive aspen groves sweeping across the mountains serve up a scenery overload, offering a seemingly new landscape to play in.

This guide will give you all the information you need to do Durango in fall right!

When to See the Fall Colors

One thing to keep in mind when planning your autumn escapades is that the higher you go in altitude, the earlier the leaves change. Elevations above 8,000 feet usually kick off the fall color season in early September.

The weather also impacts when the aspens get their glow on. If there’s a cold snap early in the season, the colors will snap to it. If it stays warm, the colors will take longer to change. With that in mind, here are the typical time frames for the best fall colors in Durango, Silverton and Telluride:

Durango

(Early-Mid October)

The first couple weeks of October are usually the best time to enjoy the fall colors around Durango. This also goes for nearby towns with similar elevations like Hesperus and Mancos, which offer amazing aspen ogling.

Silverton

(Mid-Late September)

Silverton’s fall colors come earlier than Durango’s, typically by mid-September and lasting until first week of October. Ouray also peaks during this time, making for an obnoxiously beautiful day on the Million Dollar Highway.

Telluride

(Late September – Early October)

Telluride fall colors are similar to Silverton’s, typically peaking in last weeks September into early October. Its neighbor Rico, Colorado also changes during this time, and offers an impeccable drive to and from Telluride.
