The Story of Browns Canyon: A Canyon Carved by Time
Stretching 13 miles along the Arkansas River between Fisherman’s Bridge and Stone Bridge just south of Buena Vista, Colorado, Browns Canyon was shaped over millions of years by the flow of snowmelt and the uplift of the Sawatch Mountain Range. The section begins in Nathrop, CO just south of Buena Vista.The Tennessee Pass rail line once carried ore and passengers through this corridor. As mining faded, adventure tourism took its place. Today the canyon is recognized as one of America’s most beloved rafting destinations and protected as a National Monument.
Browns Canyon’s cliffs are composed of Precambrian granite over 1.7 billion years old, polished smooth by eons of water and wind. Look for wildlife such as elk, foxes, and prairie falcons along the canyon rim as you navigate rapids shaped by these same geologic forces.
River Conditions & Seasonality
Rafting season on the Arkansas River runs May through Labor Day Weekend, with river levels strongly influenced by snowmelt from the Sawatch and Mosquito ranges of the Colorado Rockies.
In May and June, flows average between 1,200 and 2,500 CFS, for more than eight class III rapids with splashy waves and thrilling drops. As summer progresses, the river gradually drops to a more moderate 700–1,200 CFS range, offering ideal conditions for families and first-time rafters.
Thanks to supplemental water releases from Twin Lakes and Turquoise Lake reservoirs, Browns Canyon maintains steady flows through most of the summer. These releases typically continue until August 15th, ensuring flows of 650cfs or more for excellent rafting conditions during the peak season. After August 15th, the releases tapers off to a recreational base flow of 350 CFS offering a more technical river navigating experience that requires precise maneuvering and plenty of team work paddling.

Trip Details
Browns Canyon covers a 13-mile stretch of the Arkansas River, beginning at Fisherman’s Bridge and ending 13 miles downstream at Stone Bridge. Depending on water levels, trips often take out at Hecla Junction (9.5 miles down river from Fisherman’s Bridge) during lower flows. The takeouts are accessed with country roads 194 and 291 off of U.S. Highway 285.
The river drops an average of 31 feet per mile, keeping the water moving quickly. Expect about two hours on the water for the half day trip, and approximately four hours on the river for the full day adventure, which includes lunch supplied from our favorite bakery in Buena Vista served riverside. The full day experience lasts roughly six hours total round trip.
Along the way, rafters encounter 14 named Class II and III rapids. Notable rapids include Screaming Right Hand Turn (III), Canyon Doors (III), Pinball (III), Zoom Flume (III), Egg Beater (III), The Squeeze (III), Hemorrhoid Rock (III), Heckle Jeckle (III), Giant Steps (III), The Seven Stairs (III), Widowmaker (III), Raft Ripper (III), Seidel’s Suckhole (III), and the playful Last Chance (II) near the stone bridge takeout.

Between rapids, calmer pools offer time to soak in ponderosa pines clinging to granite cliffs, juniper studded slopes, and the occasional bighorn sheep or bald eagle. Access to this section is provided via County Roads 291 and 191 or US Hwy 285.
Trips meet daily at our Buena Vista location off Hwy 25, with convenient departure times to fit your schedule:
- The ½ day trip lasts 2 hours on the water, 4 hours round trip with meet time options at 8:00 am, 9:00 am, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm daily.
- The full day trip lasts 4 hours on the water, 6 hours round trip and meets at 9:00 am daily.
- The 2 day 1 night trip meets at 9:30 am on Mondays and Fridays.

Daily Trips: 1/2 down, 1/2 charged 30 days prior to trip.
Multiday Trips: 1/3 down with remaining balance charged in thirds, with full balance due 60 days prior.

Cancellation Policy
Daily Trips:
- Receive a full refund with written notice 24 hours or more before the trip. Less notice, no refund.
Multi-Day Trips:
- 60+ days: Receive a refund less $200 per person unrecoverable fees.
- 45+ days: Reschedule for another trip/date, or receive Mild to Wild gift certificate less $200 per person.
- Less than 45 days, unfortunately there will be no refund. Substitutions/name changes are allowed.
- RoamRight Travel Insurance is recommended to help cover unforeseen circumstances, such as cancelled flights, sickness or medical evacuations.
- Guests needing to be evacuated from the canyon will be charged a minimum of $1,000 per person.

In addition to the listed trip cost, we collect an additional 9% for River and Land Access Fees (ie. Forest Service, BLM, City, Private Land Use).

We reserve the right to switch river/locations based on current conditions and a minimum number of participants. This trip requires 4 participants or paid seats to depart.

Our Browns Canyon season typically runs from May through Labor Day. We offer daily departures for our Half-Day, Full-Day (with riverside lunch), and Multi-Day adventures. Whether you want to catch the early-season “big water” or a scenic late-summer float, we have a trip that fits your schedule.
When can I raft Browns Canyon in Buena Vista?
The best time depends on your preferred adventure level. Peak runoff typically occurs from late May through June, offering high-energy Class III+ waves. July and August feature classic Class III flows that are ideal for families and first-timers thanks to the voluntary flow management program on the Arkansas River.
What is the minimum age to raft Browns Canyon?
The minimum age is 7 years old (and at least 50 lbs). During the high water flows in June, age limits may occasionally increase to 10+.
What should I wear and bring on my Browns Canyon trip?
The Arkansas River features a high-altitude climate with intense sun and cool snowmelt water. Use this guide to prepare for your Browns Canyon excursion.
- Sun Protection: At 8,000 feet, the sun is significantly stronger. Use waterproof sunscreen (SPF 30+), SPF lip balm, and polarized sunglasses with a retaining strap.
- Performance Clothing: Wear quick-drying synthetic layers like polyester or nylon. Avoid cotton, which stays cold and wet. A swimsuit or synthetic sun-shirt is the best base layer.
- Secure Footwear: You must have shoes that stay on your feet while swimming. Sturdy sandals with heel straps or old sneakers are required. No flip-flops or crocs without straps.
- Hydration: The Colorado climate is very dry. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Post-Trip Comfort: Leave a towel and a full change of dry clothes and shoes in your vehicle for after the trip.
Pro Tip: Managing Water Temperatures > The Arkansas River is fed by mountain snowmelt. In May and June, water temperatures are typically 45-50°F, warming to 60°F by late summer. We provide neoprene wetsuits, wetsuit boots, for rent and complimentary fleece and splash tops at our Buena Vista office to keep you comfortable regardless of the weather.

White water rafting is an inherently dangerous activity with risks that cannot be entirely eliminated. As a result, we require all guests to sign a liability waiver and assumption of risk before departing. However, your experience is our top priority. To minimize risk, we employ professional guides that exceed state training requirements and trip leaders that average 2,000 river miles of experience. We utilize quality and well maintained self bailing rafts, U.S. Coast Guard approved personal floatation devices, and helmets.
