- Even if you find a clean-looking water source, that doesn’t mean it is safe to drink. Pack your water in or use a purifying system.
- Bring healthy, carbohydrate rich snacks to keep your energy level up.
- Wear appropriate clothing for the location and season; layers are important.
- Always wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for extra sun protection.
- Check the weather forecast before heading out.
- If you don’t know the area, bring a map and compass or GPS enabled device.
- Bring a first aid kit tailored to your outing.
- Carry a mobile phone in case of an emergency.
- Other commonly forgot items to pack on overnight trips that you should bring along: flashlight, knife, waterproof fire starter, whistle, insect repellant.
- If going out overnight, make camp before it gets dark.
- Be aware of any dangerous wildlife and plants in the area.
- Tell someone where you’re going!
